How Ecclesia Construction Transformed an Old Church into Vizion Church’s Thriving Worship Center

Our work on Vizion Church’s new worship center was no exception. It was an incredible journey of transformation, both for the building itself and for the Church that calls it home.

The Vision Behind Vizion Church

Vizion Church began as a small Bible study at UNC Charlotte, started by Pastor Tyson Coughlin with just 12 students. As attendance grew, the group transitioned into a Church in 2012, initially meeting in an elementary school gymnasium. Despite early struggles with attendance and location challenges, the Church remained steadfast, focusing on four core pillars: prayer, connect groups, assimilation, and gospel-centered preaching. This commitment led to exponential growth, creating an urgent need for a permanent space.

A Building with Untapped Potential

When Vizion Church acquired an old, foreclosed Church building on the outskirts of Uptown Charlotte, it was clear that significant work was needed to make it a suitable home for their thriving congregation. The structure had great bones but required a complete transformation to reflect the modern yet reverent style that aligned with the Church’s mission: to present the timeless gospel in a fresh and inviting way.

The Ecclesia Transformation

Ecclesia Construction worked closely with Vizion Church to develop a plan that would not only restore the building but also create a space that fostered worship, community, and growth. Some of the major renovations included:

• Exterior Revival: We preserved the traditional steeple, a nod to the Church’s historical roots, while modernizing the facade to create an inviting and contemporary presence.

• Sanctuary Expansion: With attendance on the rise, we designed a sanctuary layout that maximized seating capacity while maintaining intimacy for worship.

• State-of-the-Art Audio/Visual Systems: To support dynamic preaching and worship services, we installed cutting-edge lighting, sound, and video systems.

• Multi-Purpose Spaces: We incorporated flexible spaces for connect groups, discipleship programs, and community outreach.

• Enhanced Accessibility & Infrastructure: Our renovations ensured that the building was fully accessible and equipped with modern amenities to serve the congregation’s diverse needs.

A New Era for Vizion Church

In 2021, Vizion Church officially opened the doors of its new home with 350 attendees. The impact was immediate. Within just a year, the Church had doubled in size, and by 2023, attendance had surpassed 2,000 worshippers across five Sunday services. The new space allowed Vizion Church to not only accommodate their growing congregation but also expand their ministry efforts, including outreach programs and citywide events.

More Than a Building—A Movement

One of the most remarkable aspects of this transformation has been the ripple effect on the community. The Church has become a diverse gathering place where people from all walks of life—college students, business professionals, former addicts, and athletes—come together in pursuit of Christ. Vizion Church’s influence now extends beyond its walls, with plans for a citywide gathering of over 50 churches at Bojangles Coliseum in 2024.
